First Day:
In the morning we pick you up from Maturin airport which is the capital of Monagas state. From here we leave by car to San Jose de Buja, where our boat will collect you.
In two hours we will be at our Orinoco Atlantic Lodge on the northern edge of the Orinoco Delta. Where the fresh, dark glossy waters of the Orinoco and the salty Atlantic ocean coalesce.
This is the location where Christopher Columbus, on his third expedition, believed he had discovered a new continent and not an island. He concluded this from witnessing the colossal amounts of fresh water flowing out of the Orinoco delta and into the sea. From reviewing the wide-ranging vegetation and giant mangrove trees lining the shores, Columbus believed that he had found the Garden of Eden.
In the afternoon, we will board a motor boat and negotiate our way through mangrove islands. Here, you will be able to survey the fauna and flora in the area, including an island where bird’s shelter for the night and to gaze into an unforgettable delta sunset. After dinner at the lodge, we will take a boat trip into the night looking for caiman.
Next day:
After breakfast we will leave the camp for a jungle walk, and learn about the rain forest and its diverse vegetations. Followed by a visit to the indigenous Warao families and communities to observe the way they survive in this environment. On our way back to camp we will try our luck fishing for piranha.
