Cumana

Mochima 2day/1night

First Day :
In the morning we will meet you at your hotel and bring you to the harbor. From here we will board the Gran Cacique Express. Our destination is the colonial city of Cumana, the first city of the South American continent founded in 1521. As we cross the Caribbean sea we will pass between the islands of Coche and Cubagua and the Gulf of Cariaco.

From Cumana we will drive 30 minutes to the national park of Mochima, the largest of its kind in the Caribbean. Spreading both inland and seaward, its name in the native language means "abundant waters". Exploring the tortured coast, you can discover more than 30 wild islands, scores of remote creeks, unspoiled beaches and a colored seabed.

Mochima is a delight for those who like lonely beaches and are nature lovers. Many of the finest beaches are out of sight but with our help you will have them all to yourself.

We will leave here and take a boat to Playa Blanca for lunch. After lunch you can relax on the pearl white sands or bathe in the crystal clear waters. We will then return to the boat and venture out along the coast. We will take you to locations where you can snorkel or scuba dive and discover some of the treasures beneath. There are colorful fish, coral reef, families of dolphins and a sunken steamboat in this underwater universe.

As the sunsets over Mochima we will unwind and enjoy a long refreshing cocktail. We then return to the island for check in and dinner in Mochima Town.

Second Day :
Next morning, after breakfast we will drive to Cumana and explore this old colonial city. Cumana has the honor of being the first city in the South American continent founded by the Spanish, back in 1521, under the command of Gonzalo de Ocampo. Its name, in the language of the Cumanagoto native tribe, means the ‘union between the see and the river’.

Today the city, situated at the mouth of the Manzanares river on the Caribbean coast in the NE of Venezuela, is home to one of five sites for the Universidad del Oriente and a busy maritime industry, with one of the largest tuna fleets in Venezuela. Cumana is also the home town of Antonio Jose de Sucre the first president of Bolivia and Andrés Eloy Blanco, one of the most important Venezuelan poets and politicians.

Cumana features a wide variety of colonial style architecture which is still in excellent condition. A large old Spanish fort, the Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia (Castle of Saint Anthony of the Eminence) can be seen from the beach, and is open to the public. Also surviving is the Castillo de Santa Maria de la Cabeza, which was built in 1669, and the Museo del Mar exhibits marine and maritime artifacts. While here we will visit the castle and experience its incredible view of the Golf of Cariaco and the peninsula of Araya.

At 11:30 we lunch, then at 12:30 we board the Gran Cacique express and return to your hotel.
